| Subject: Best Macro Lens for a Nikon D80 From: Ramprasad J
|
| I am looking to buy a macro lens (1:1) for a Nikon D80. Nikon & Sigma are options for now. Can you please guide on the best lens on this regard.

Hmm that sounds like an amazing lens Tony. I still love my old Tamron 90mm. |

I use a Sigma 50mm 1:2.8 DG MACRO D lens which is very good the only problem is that being 50mm I'm almost touching the subject to get the biggest macro. With a 105mm lens it would be a more relax shoot. |

Ramprasad, I think it depends on your style and what you want to photograph. If you don't want to use a tripod and like chasing insects like I do, then 105mm VR works good. VR does help but don't expect it to help you when you get go down to 1:1. Same applies to auto focus function too. At 1:1, it boils down to good technique, a decent support and good lighting. Personally, I would go for the 200mm micro Nikkor. It will give me a good working distance and its an amazing lens. I am saving up and that is going to be my next lens. |

My vote is for the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 - a sweet lens, well worth a look! |

I guess we all have our own favourites, I can't fault my 105mm vr micro. It also works well for a quality portrait lens, but as a true macro (1:1) I expected brilliant results when I first bought it, but as Vijay says it works best for me when used with a flash and good support. |
