Nfolio v2.0

| Subject: Nfolio v2.0 From: Nick Lewis (Editor)

| Its been a long time getting started but I have begun work on the next generation Nfolio, starting with a new homepage design. The new site will have a very minimilistic style so as not to detract from the photography. The banner will be changed for a more simplistic and catchy looking logo. This is your opportunity to suggest ideas... |

Nick, will this be a face lift - or will this include new functionality? If so - what can we expect? |

Hi Carl - I am keeping things close to my chest at the moment because this work is likely to take a long time to complete. There will be a design change, some code re-writes to improve efficiency and some new functionality. |

"This is your opportunity to suggest ideas..."
Tags... a good idea in theory, but not always a practical solution. As an alternative, could we still have categories (which you select when uploading a picture), but instead of tags have keywords. Keywords can only be selected from a pre-defined list (the existing tags) and new keywords can be requested and then approved by moderators. This means you can still browse by a general category, but have the ability to search on more specific words... of course this would require a search facility - but with predefined keywords, you can use indexing to perform more efficient searches.
Also - how about allowing us to host our own pictures instead of uploading? By providing the URL to a picture you can cut down on storage space costs and bandwidth usage. If a picture is not displayed because it has been removed, the critiques are not displayed, instead a message is shown explaining the image is not hosted by nFolio and has been removed. Its a cost saver, and something that most people here probably do anyway. I dont know if this idea will go down well with everyone as you could argue that a lot of images would soon become unavailable. |

Other suggestions I can think of are things like photographer of the month? The photographer who has the highest accumulative score is the Ph-OTM, you can only qualify if you have submitted 5+ pictures (or a different amount) or maybe a voting system like POTW. Also - contributor of the month, the member who has made the most critiques. They are incentives to contribute more to the site. Make this only available to subscribers and it shouldnt get abused, it may encourage more subscriptions?
You occasionally see people uploading pictures when they seek nothing more than advice, so how about an option to disable critique's for an image? There could even be a category for this, and the ability to upload the amended shot based on suggestions - and then be able to relate the two, show them simultaneously so that users can see the differences and see how the advice was applied. |

The remote pictures option is something I've seen before -- it does rely on trust that people don't change the file under your feet (so the reviews might slate it for having too big a signature or something, and then the person edits the pic to remove them, thus making the reviews refer to a different revision) |

Nick,
I am new to the site, an amateur photographer and am addicted - a great place to share work, get feedback and discuss stuff that I previously hadn't considered. One suggestion I would make is that new site has a search function in the forums. I've been looking for feedback on a good slide scanner and have had to trawl through lots of stuff just to see what is there.
Good luck with the new site. |

Another suggestion if I may?
Have 2 critique text boxes for each critique. Both side by side, and both submitted simultaneously.... the reason, have one for "Good" and one for "Bad". That way they are clearly seperated and shouldnt get misinterpreted when being read. It would also make critique's easier as you have to think in 2 clear channels rather than "going off on one" and eventually not communicating your point precisely.
Just a suggestion. |

...and another.
In the forums, could posts be numbered, and a "Reply" option on eahc post - the reply would then include a read-only caption that reads "In reply to post #3" or similar. Of course a general "Add post" option woudl also be needed, it helps to read the correct flow of a thread. |

Lakshman M - whatever is done on a site such as this, you cannot prevent people from saving the images. I work in IT, and if I go to a site where there is javascript prevention of the right click etc, there are a few other ways round the problem in every case. It's not worth putting the effort in. If you're worried about people downloading your images, should you really be putting them on the web at all? The sizes we use on NFolio are too small to print at any decent quality - it's just one of those occupational hazards.
